The Deceiving Scale
Body fat % is a measurement that I use to assess your nutritional status and general level of fitness. It is important to understand that the body is composed of fat weight and lean body weight. Fat weight is the amount of fat a person has on their body. Lean weight is everything else: muscle, bones, organs, etc.
Studies have shown that having a high fat % is a risk factor for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other health problems. However, having a high lean body weight allows for easier and more efficient movement and also allows for a higher caloric expenditure at rest and during activity. Muscle is a gift that keeps on giving. If you are lean and active, your muscle tissue will continue to burn calories even while you are at rest!
Contrary to popular belief, the scale should not be used to determine your success in a fitness program. 1 pound of body fat occupies approximately three times more space than 1 pound of muscle. In other words, it is possible to lose inches around your waist/arms/legs and weigh the same amount as you did when you started an exercise regimen. As a result, at Kev’s Gym, your success will be measured on your body fat percentage over time, not your total weight.
